On December 25, Christians around the world will gather to celebrate Jesus’ birth. Joyful carols, special liturgies, brightly wrapped gifts, festive foods—these all characterize the feast today, at least in the northern hemisphere. But just how did the Christmas festival originate? How did December 25 come to be associated with Jesus’ birthday?

A Prayer When You're Not Sure What to Pray

Often time, when you’re in the midst of things so great, you’re not sure what to pray. I offer this version of the Lord’s Prayer for you to pray while thinking about some thing or someone you’re struggling with or hoping the best for.

OUR FATHER,
my Father, and the Father of every one of us,

WHO ART IN HEAVEN,
Who is over me and the one(s) I name in my heart, reigning in mercy and blessed faithfulness,

HALLOWED BE THY NAME,
let Your name be holy in my life and the life of the one(s) I name in my heart,
let Your name so pure to me and us all, that we only speak it to pray, to praise or share You with others.

THY KINGDOM COME,
let Your kingdom come to me and the one(s) I name in my heart,
let the power of Jesus Christ, His life, His death, and His resurrection come to me and one(s) I name in my heart so that we may be changed and transformed by Your Holy Spirit from despair to hope, fear to courage, and life to death,

THY WILL BE DONE,
yes, Lord, choose for me and the one(s) I name in my heart, that which is best, that which is the greatest good to be done in my life and theirs,

HERE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.

GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD,
give to me and the one(s) I name in my heart, what we need for this day,
give to us the job, the home, the family, the friends, the food, the clothing that we need for this day and no more,
give to us the healing, the comfort, the strength, the recovery, the prosperity needed that we may not loose heart but ever trust in You.

FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES,
forgive me and the one(s) I name in my heart, for all the times we have crossed the line, when we have what we ought not to have done and refuse to do the good we ought to have done
free us from these things that we my have Your peace in the midst of things that can offer us no peace,

AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US,
help me and the one(s) I name in my heart, to forgive as we are forgiven, to let go of all the ways that others have crossed the line with us or others,
lead us to let go of all that was done against us, and knowing that all these go into Your hands that were nailed on the cross for my trespasses and theirs.

AND LET US NOT INTO TEMPTATION,
yes Lord, let no other way be set before me, and the one(s) I name in my heart, that would lead us away from You and Your good and gracious will for us,
when any such other ways are set before us, lead on my Lord and my King that I and the one I name in my heart, may not turn to the right or the left,

BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL,
yes Lord, grant that whenever I and the one(s) I name in my heart, departs from You and Your ways, come and save us from such evil and deliver us back into Your forgiveness and favor,
deliver us from the power of the evil one and the evil desires of our own hearts that we may not lose our way.
I pray all these things for myself, and the one(s) I name in my heart, because Your is the KINGDOM AND THE POWER to get these things done to Your
GLORY, FOREVER AND EVER. AMEN.
